The inspiration for the design came from the deep eaves, a significant element in traditional Japanese architecture, which has largely been ignored in modern houses. The architects aimed to understand the relevance of these traditional elements in the modern setting and, with the help of technology, reintroduce them in a way that would allow the distinctive Japanese qualities to flourish.
The Pitched Roof House stands out for its simplicity and the unique way it blurs the boundary between the inside and the outside. Only forty percent of the space under the roof is enclosed within the interior, allowing for an easy transition from the inside to the outside. This design feature is a nod to traditional Japanese houses, which are known for their open spaces and connection with nature.
The house was built using the latest technology, pushing the limits of architectural design. The cantilevered roof, which extends over 6 meters, mimics the Japanese papercraft, Origami, acting as a monocoque element. This design feature minimizes the support needed, making the structure more efficient and sustainable.
The house was designed for a well-known Japanese pop songwriter who wanted a place where he could disconnect from the pressures of daily life. The enclosed space allows for basic living tasks, while the open space under the deep eaves connects the inhabitants to nature and the surroundings. The sliding doors, another feature borrowed from traditional Japanese architecture, can be used to shift the ambiance within the living space.
The Pitched Roof House is a testament to Tezuka Architects' commitment to innovation and their respect for tradition. It is a perfect example of how traditional elements can be reinterpreted and incorporated into modern designs to create living spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The design was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
